Beginner needs help with Niche

Okay, so i've joined BIP 1.0 and 2.0, read the ebook, and done a good bit of research. I've decided that my first niche didn't have enough affiliate programs to turn a profit (though I may revisit the niche later as a pet project). So, I turned to a slightly more widely known niche and found that there is really only one affiliate competiter, and more affiliate programs available for the product. However, I would be competing with some actual merchandisers that do not offer affiliate programs for the top spots in the niche (Gothic Lolita Clothing). Would this be a threat to my site? Would it be reasonable to assume that emailing the business and asking whether I could have affiliate rights be possible? And the main question, does this look like a profitable niche? Any insight would be much appreciated.

If those merchants are serious about their business and the products they sell, then yes, definitely ask if they can set something up with you as an affiliate. But in such cases, simply asking them is not enough. They want to hear about how much it would benefit them so you need to stress the point on how you will be pre-selling their product to your users driving buyers to their business. It also helps to offer a little insight on how you will be getting traffic to your site as well (perhaps a blog about you or friends using the product, going to events with the products, etc)
