Announcement: The Black Ink Project

Jeremy Palmer's picture

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was working on something big for 2008. I’m finally ready to pull back the curtain and talk about it in more detail.

the black ink project

Quick Summary

I’m launching a new project aimed at new affiliates who are struggling to become profitable.

Background

I got into affiliate marketing in late 2003. As a new affiliate I learned the ropes very quickly, and started making money shortly after putting a few affiliate links on one of my sites. Back then it was relatively easy to get a top search listing, click prices were low, and the competition wasn’t very savvy. Anybody with a decent looking site and a little traffic could have made money.

Fast forward 5 years to 2008 and the affiliate landscape is completely different. It can take months (sometimes years) to get a front page listing in Google, click prices have sky-rocketed, and the competition is a lot smarter. Creating a successful affiliate business in this climate is a lot harder than it was five years ago.

The Lie

Unfortunately, a lot of the people selling e-books and info products would have you believe that making money online is easy.

Check out some of these ads (lies highlighted in red):

Make Money Online?
12+ Income Stream Home Business. 5 Minutes per Day or Less.

Make Money In Your Sleep
$250,000 Potential. Fully Automated No Calls / Selling.

$100,000/Month Guaranteed
Start Earning within 15 minutes. Step-by-Step Instructions

guru liesNow I’ve been online for over 10 years, and still haven’t found a business opportunity that delivered on the “$100,000/month in 5 minutes a day” promise.

Click on one of these ads and you’ll be taken to a page with pictures of the latest European sports cars, piles of cash, and a good looking couple sitting on the back of a Yacht. They focus on the dream of making money, rather than the reality of running a successful online business.

While it’s possible to make a substantial income as an affiliate, it’s unrealistic to think you can go from $0 to six-figure-success in minutes a day or from buying some automated money-making system.

The Truth

Based on my experience and observations, only a small percentage (less than 10%) of new affiliates ever go on to make any money. Even fewer go on to quit their jobs or become super affiliates.

There are a number of reasons affiliates don’t make it. Here are few of the most common:

  • Unrealistic Expectations
  • Too Much Time Learning and Not Enough Time Doing – Most are anxious to learn, but few actually create and execute a well thought out plan.
  • Failure to Research Markets and Understand Customers
  • Lack of Technical Skills – You don’t have to be a graphic designer or have a degree in computer science, but a basic understanding of how to build and manage websites goes a long way. Most of the successful affiliates I’ve worked with either A) know how to build sites, B) have invested time and effort to learn, or C) have learned how to outsource.

There’s no shortage of blogs, forums, or books to help you get started in this business. These learning materials serve as a great guide and reference, but without implementation they’re not very useful.

The Best Way to Learn

In order to become proficient in any skill you must first learn, then do, and repeat. This cycle of continuous improvement is what makes you successful.

Most resources and guides help you learn, but few show you exactly how to do.

My e-book is a great place to start, but once you’re ready to take the training wheels off you may need a little more support and guidance – that’s where the “Black Ink Project” fits in.

What is the Black Ink Project?

In accounting, the term black ink (or operating in the black) is used to refer to a company that is profitable. On the flip side, when a company loses money they’re said to be operating in the red.

The goal of the Black Ink Project is to show affiliates how to bridge the gap between learning and becoming profitable.

My book covers the fundamentals and gives you a solid foundation for building on. Some people find this is enough to get them started, and proceed in their own direction.

But many don’t have the skills or experience required to take the next step, which is taking what you learn from the book and turning it into action. It’s not that you lack motivation, but finding and sticking to the right path can be a challenge.

The Black Ink Project will help you get over the hump by focusing on the areas where most affiliates fail. The project will help you:

  • Set realistic goals, based on your time and budget.
  • Develop and launch a campaign from start to finish. At the end of the course, you’ll have a complete action plan and checklist you can use for future sites.
  • Research prospective opportunities. Learn out how to avoid potential pitfalls and find the right niche.
  • Learn the software, scripts and tools that will help you create and manage your affiliate site. I’ve partnered with Yahoo Small Business and Adobe to deliver this project and we’ll be covering their tools and platforms throughout. I’ll also be giving away all of the scripts and templates used in the training.

What’s Next

The Black Ink Project will be delivered throughout the course of a month. Each lesson builds on the next, and it’s recommended that you follow the same timeline when possible.

Most of the sessions will be recorded, and made available on the site shortly after they’re delivered. We’ll also be doing some live streams with Q&A sessions throughout the course.

What’s the Price

Free. Yes, you read that right; it’s not a smudge on your screen. I decided to kick off the new site by raising the free bar to new heights.

Because of hosting, bandwidth, and webinar considerations, the Black Ink Project will be limited to the first 1,000 customers.

Who Is This Training For?

This training is aimed at new affiliates who have yet to earn a profit or are struggling to earn consistent profits.

Pre-requisite: You must read my e-book before joining this class. If you don’t have a grasp on the basics you won’t get the most out of this project.

Where Can I Sign Up?

The project is in the final stages of development. I haven’t released a schedule because I’m still ironing out my travel plans for April and May. Plus, I’m taking extra time to ensure all the systems are in place, to minimize any technical or logistical problems.

If you want to be among the first to get notified, make sure you do one (or all) of the following:

Why do I recommend subscribing to one these feeds?

  • Social experiment – I want to gauge the effectiveness of social networking and blogging for announcements.
  • E-mail deliverability is not always reliable when you have tens of thousands of users on your list.
  • Encourage members to use blog readers and social networking sites

Stay tuned for more information. I’m going to be moving on this very quickly.

All the best,

Jeremy

Sounds great!

I'm really excited about this...

A growing problem in the performance marketing space is that too many advertisers/merchants are seeking results from too few publishers/affiliates. A step toward resolving this issue: help create new affiliates that understand how to be effective in TODAY'S environment. What you're describing with this program is just what the community needs. Plus, I'm interested to see how well you can leverage feeds for distributing your messages. (No matter what you read, everyone I know has major issues with email deliverability.)

Looking forward to being one of the thousand...

Man, do I need this!

Jeremy,

I can't wait to get my hands on this!

I've been struggling for the last six months to see even a penny from the different things I'm doing online. I agree, many gurus tell you maybe what but they don't give you a repeatable process.

I'll follow you on twitter and wait anxiously for this series.

Thanks again,

Jeff

You rock Jeremy

Your book is free? The help is free? I think this relationship is moving way too fast. : ) But....me and 999 others will be awaiting the next move.

A needed fresh breath of air & truth

Michael's picture

I am so glad to see something like this, at last someone who doesn't sound like some guy at the fair wanting you to try your luck at knocking over concrete filled coke bottles. I have gotten to the point that I automatically delete any emails with any mention of dollar figures and blacklist any so called "guru" that consistently send me their weekly version of the must have software/ebook/program/seminar
Way to go Jeremy, I hope to get in when you open it up

Thanks for taking the time to do this Jeremy. I'm constantly referring people to your content because you have a very realistic approach to affiliate marketing. It's really, really difficult for the motivated beginner to cut through all the bull.

This new course sounds great and I'll be looking to get involved simply because of the consistent quality you've delivered over the years.

I am too excited!

Hi all - if anyone is keen to discuss views/questions from an Affiliate Managers point of view feel free to email me (nik (at) pctools.com). I am the affilaite manager at PC Tools Software and would be more than happy to answer any questions any new affiliates may have.

Thanks Jeremy. I am loving

Thanks Jeremy. I am loving this evolution in online training. Maybe we can call it webtraining 2.0 or 3.0.

Free ? Are you serious ? I'm ready to pay for your mentoring

sukarto's picture

Just want to give my appreciation.

I purchased your ebook in the mid 2007. There are many ebook and courses that I purchased all this years. And I don't know why your ebook is stuck with me and I print it out and put it beside my bed and read it several time.

There is something about your character that shine thru the ebook and the forum. You are a great and sincere guy that really want to help with no hidden agenda. That's really really rare in this industry!

I made my first commission on this Feb 2008 and it really give a boost to my confidence. I'm ready to follow Jeremy Palmer.

wish you always be blessed with happiness !

Great service, Jeremy!

David Chin's picture

Can't thank you enough for making this opportunity available.

Your book if for free now

Stan's picture

So after I paid the money, now your book is for free. Great.

So what about all the promised updates and upgrades I had to pay for while others won't?

Nice job buddy.

Times change and markets

Jeremy Palmer's picture

Times change and markets evolve. For example, Yahoo use to charge $30/year for 25mb of e-mail space, now they give you 2gb free. I'm just staying ahead of the curve.

maybe u right

Stan's picture

You might be right, but still it hurts :))

Anyways, I forgot to tell you about the good job you doing regardless of the free/nofree stuff.

Black Ink Project is For Me

Venell's picture

Thanks Jeremy: I'm very much looking forward to participating in the "Black Ink Project". I purchased your E-book before it became free, and have read other resources as well, but have not started my first site. This sounds like it is for me! Thanks, Venell

I'm looking forward to your new project

Doug's picture

I signed up for PPC Classroom which I thought was a really good course and you provided some great material. I know selling is the name of game, but after you became less involved it felt like one big sales pitch after another and less of a training class. I am really looking forward to your new project. You always over deliver!

Hi Jeremy,

FREE lessons sounds too good, I wonder what's in there for you.
What's the catch?

Yes it's 100% Free

Jeremy Palmer's picture

My core focus is building up this community and getting users to actively participate. I haven't figured out the business model for QYDJ yet, but I can assure you it won't be paid training, ebooks, etc. Luckily I'm in a position where I don't have to worry about how to monetize QYDJ.

Thank you for your reply

Jeremy, I'm all ready for

bcarpe52's picture

Jeremy,

I'm all ready for this but I have one problem, here at work with our firewall software and internet blocking software I can't get into things like Twitter or Facebook. In fact I have to use Proxify just to see your blog during the day. If you make your announcement during the day I have a very good chance of missing out on being one of the 1000 allowed to sign up. Is there anyway of letting us in this type of situation know when to make the move?

Thanks,

Brad

Hi Brad, The registration

Jeremy Palmer's picture

Hi Brad,

The registration will open up within a week. I'll Twitter it, send a FaceBook message (which goes to your e-mail account), and blog about it (you can get e-mail alerts on my blog too, or subscribe to the RSS feed - look in the upper right-hand corner of the blog).

After I've sent the announcement through those channels I'll craft an e-mail for the main QYDJ list.

The reason I'm giving priority to these other channels is because I'm attempting to move e-mail subscribers into new mediums like RSS and social networking apps, which I think could be more effective for broadcasting.

Best,

Jeremy

Thanks for the reply Jeremy.

bcarpe52's picture

Thanks for the reply Jeremy. I'll do my best with my work my restrictions at work to try and pick up on when you start sign ups. Hope to be one of the 1,000. Keep up the good work and good deeds.

Brad

Thanks again Jeremy!

You are one in a million. What I learnt from you back at PPC Classroom helped me from 0 dollar to about 1,000 dollar per month in the first niche I entered. Till today that campaign still remains profitable. I can't wait for this one. God bless you.

Hello Perfumer,

No tools are required, and I have many free alternatives to software/resources that will be discussed throughout the course.

It's impossible to run an online business without having a budget set aside for necessary expenses. I'll show you where those dollars can be best spent so you can get the best return on your time and money.

I'll have more info about Black Ink on Wednesday when the registration opens up at 12:00 PM PST. I'll post the sign-up link here on the blog (+twitter, +facebook) at that time.

The Black Ink Project

Ayn Elise's picture

And again, Thank you, Jeremy

I am glad to see that you do understand that many people capable of understanding the concepts, still come to a point where where they can read and fully appreciate the methods, but are not quite there with the entire skill set. I am more than willing to learn everything that I need to learn. But it is rare that you find even half of what one needs to learn, accumulate as in resources/tools/software all in one place, and with someone who knows how to do what they are attempting to sell you. I know this is free from you, but I am sure you get the point from what you have said.
So, I would be more than proud to be able to say that I did learn what I set out to do, and that, yes, I can teach that to someone else. And from what I have read from posts in different channels that you are using, this should be a great experiment and experience in a community format as well as utilizing the growing tools that are taking web 2.0 into 3.0, for the lack of a formal name for that right now.

Let's do this!

We can can do this together folks

Just give the people what they want.
